Introduction (UN Library)

    A library filled with documents published by the UN (i.e., Minutes of Meeting, Yearbook, Statistics, Reports, etc.). There are a total of 10 UN Libraries in Korea at this moment (National Assembly (1979), Seoul Nat. Univ (1992), Yonsei Univ. (1994), National Library (1997), Pusan Univ. (1998), Jeonnam Univ. (2000), Pusan Dongui Univ. (2001), Kyunghee Univ. (Suwon Campus, 2003), Incheon Michuhol Library (2009)). Among them, the Korea Univ. UN Library has the longest history (established in 1957).

About the UN Document Symbol

  • A symbol that is often used as a basis for citation, appears frequently on the cover of a book
  • To understand this symbol, the structure must be identified properly. The structure consists of 2-4 ‘/’ (slashes).
  • “Publishing Agency/(Affiliated Organization)/Session/Document Occurrence Sequence/Additional Information”

Publishing Agency : Refers to the agency/institution where the document is published or submitted

  • A/- General Assembly(총회)
  • S/- Security Council(안전보장이사회)
  • E/- Economic and Social Council(경제사회이사회)
  • ST/- Secretariat (유엔사무국)

Affiliated Organization: Indicates which affiliated organization (or a committee) is in charge of the document

  • -/CN. …/- Commission
  • -/CONF. …/- Conference
  • Used when an affiliated organization is not required, or when there is a special target (+ when the document is issued to a third-party)
  • -/RES. …/- Resolutions
  • -/WP. … Working papers

Session / Document Issuance Order

  • General Assembly : Mark ‘session’
  • Economic and Social Council : Mark ‘year’
  • Security Council : Year (However, mark the ‘session’ in the case of resolutions and MOMs)

Additional Information : Modification Status of the Document, Modification/Revision Serial Number, Additional Phrase to Original Text

United Nations Common Database(UN data)

  • Contains 60 million + statistics (after 1900) from over 290 countries around the world, provided from 34 different DBs including the UNSD and other affiliated organizations of UN
  • National Account, Population, Energy, Women’s Status, Industrial Output, etc.

Commodity Trade Statistics Database (COMTRADE)

  • World Commodity Trade statistics (since 1962). Contains more than 700 million + records.
  • Statistics of import/export of certain products between certain countries, etc.

Millenium Development Goals Indicators Database

  • Includes 60 different indexes on the ‘8 Millennium Development Goals,’ adopted by the UN Secretariat, IMF, OECD, and World Bank
  • PPP(Proportion of population below $1.25 per day)), etc.

Social Indicators

  • Social indicators/indexes that include a wide range of topics such as population, education, housing, health, employment, etc.

Demographic Yearbook

  • Official statistics on various topics of 230 countries around the world (i.e., population size/composition, economic activities, education, ethnicity, language, etc.)

Country Practices on National Official Statistics

  • The website has a number of data related to the official statistics approved by the UN Statistics Division
  • In 1994, the UNSD adopted the (Fundametal Principles of Official Statistics), and the ‘Good Practices Database’ provides examples of various countries that applied this principle.

UNCTADstat

  • UNCTADstat provides more than 150 indexes that are suitable for analyzing global trade and the investment/development of each country, while also providing an extensive range of time series data.
  • The database includes the following topics:

  Population and labor force
  Information economy
  Maritime transport

International Organizations Recruitment Center

Introduction (EU Documentation Center)

    The first EU Documentation Center established in Korea in 1991. Currently, in addition to the Korea Univ. EU Documentation Center, there is a dedicated EU Documentation Center in Busan National Univ., Seoul National Univ., Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and the National Assembly Library. This data center, in particular, is specialized in the field of European Law, and has been collecting Official Journals, which is an important material for identifying and understanding EU activities, starting from the data of ECSC (1952). Different data are collected in different forms – OJ Special Edition (1952-1972) + L/C Series (after 1974) -> Microfiche, Data from 1991-1997 -> Paper, Data from 1998 -> CD-ROM, OJS Series (after 2001) -> CD-ROM

Official Journal

  • Includes all EU laws and law enforcement activities of each agency/institution. Depending on the content, the publication is divided/classified into five different series, each of which includes:
  • L Series (Legislation) : Includes Regulation, Directive, Decision, Recommendation/Opinion, Agreement, Convention, and Budget Resolution.
  • C Series (information and notices) : Activities of each EU agency/institution & Reports from the Secondary Law (Court)  Full Text of a Committee’s Legislative Proposal, Decisions made by the Board of Directors, Opinions from the Economic & Social Commission, Summary of the ICJ’s ruling, Annual Inspection Report from the Board of Audit, etc.
  • S Series (Supplement) : Includes various contracts and bidding information.

Com documents

    One of the most well-known documents produced by the Commission. Includes information such as the Proposals for Legislation, Broad Policy Documents, Reports on the Implementation Policy, etc. The document number is created by using the year of publication. Before 1998, it was in the form of (97)123 (only includes the last two digits of the publication year), but after 1998, the document number is in the form of (1998)123 (includes all four digits).

Legislation

    The EU Law consists of a number of treaties/annexes on the establishment of EU, laws enacted by various EU agencies/institutions, domestic laws of EU Member States, and International Laws which govern international organizations and international treaties. Depending on the court and the form, the EU Law can be divided into four different categories:

Case-law

    The official document that includes the court’s ruling is the ‘Reports of Cases before the Court (a.k.a European Court Report (ECR)), and the rulings of the Primary Court & European Court (established in 1989) are distinguished by ‘C’ and ‘T.’
