본 연구는 신흥국 다국적기업을 중심으로 해외직접투자가 기업의 국내 혁신성과에 어떤 영향을 미치는지에 초점을 맞추었다. 신흥국 다국적기업의 전략적 자산 추구 동기, 신흥국 다국적기업 국제화를 중심으로 한 스프링보드 관점, 그리고 역지식이전과 관련된 이론을 활용하여, 신흥국 다국적기업이 해외직접투자를 통해 해외에서 획득한 지식을 본국으로 이전하여 본사의 혁신 활동을 강화하는 것을 구체적으로 설명하였다. 한편, 본 연구에서는 역지식이전의 효율성을 결정하는 다양한 요인들도 고려하여 기업 측면, 산업 측면 및 국가 측면에서 6개의 조절변수의 공동 효과를 검증하였다. 결과에 따르면, 해외직접투자는 기업의 국내 혁신 성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 추정되었으며 과거 해외직접투자 경험 및 첨단 산업 소속은 해외직접투자와 국내 혁신 성과의 인과관계에 조절 효과를 미치는 것을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 신흥국 다국적기업의 해외직접투자가 국내 혁신 발전에 도움이 되는지, 다양한 요인들의 공동 효과가 있는지를 파악하여 기존 연구에 기여하였으며, 지식이전 결정요인들이 신흥국 다국적기업이 해외 자회사에서 본사로 지식을 이전하는 역지식이전 과정에도 적용 가능한지를 검증하였다.

This study focused on how outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) affected firms’ domestic innovation performance, in the specific background of multinational enterprise from emerging economies (EMNE). The strategic asset-seeking motive of EMNEs, the springboard perspective focusing on the internationalization activities of EMNEs, and theories related to reverse knowledge transfer were utilized in the study to explain how EMNE used FDI as an approach to enhance the innovation activities of headquarter by transferring the knowledge acquired in the host countries back to home country. Meanwhile, multi-level factors determining the efficiency of reverse knowledge transfer were considered. The joint effect of six moderators in firm level, industry level and country level were testified together in the study. The empirical results showed that OFDI could positively affect EMNE’s domestic innovation performance. Past OFDI experience and high-tech industry affiliation moderated the positive impact of OFDI on the innovation performance. The study contributed to the existing research by finding out whether the OFDI of EMNEs was beneficial for domestic innovation development and identifying the joint effects of factors from multiple levels. It also retestified whether the determinants of knowledge transfer were applicable in the context of reverse knowledge transfer where knowledge was transferred from subsidiaries to headquarters in emerging economies.
