Abstract
현재 문헌에서는 기업들의 지역화확대에 대한 연구가 기업들의 다운스트림 활동 (예: 판매)에만 집중해 왔기 때문에 업스트림 활동 (예: 연구개발)에 대한 연구는 많지 않다. 즉, 본 연구는 국제경영 분류에 하나인 지역화확대와 기업의 국제적 연구개발 활동이라는 두개의 부문을 결합해서 현재 문헌에 존재하는 공백을 이바지하다. 국제적 연구개발 인원수를 한기업의 국제적 연구개발 활동의 프록시로 만들어서 측정한 후에, 기업들이 연구개발 활동을 하는 지역 수에 따라 이 영향이 어느 정도 강해지는지 분석했다. 2021년 EU R&D Investment Scoreboard라는 리스트에서 지난해에 연구개발 활동에 제일 많이 투자한 기업을 분리한 후에 Orbis Cross-border Investment (OCI) 데이터베이스에서 국제적 연구개발을 하는 총675 기업의 2011년부터 2021년까지 데이터를 가져와서 분석했다. 연구 결과에 따라 국제적 연구개발 활동이 이 기업들의 성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다. 또한 기업들 연구개발 활동을 진행하는 지역 수의 증가를 따라 처음에는 국제적 연구개발 활동 성과에 미치는 영향이 강해졌다가, 지역수가 커질수록 이 영향이 약해지는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 이 연구는 기업의 국제적 연구개발 활동을 측정하게 해주는 프록시를 제안하고, 현재에서 기업들의 연구개발 활동이 어느정도 분산되어 있는지, 그리고 지역화확대가 기업들의 연구개발 활동과 성과의 관계에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다.
The current literature under the regionalization stream is heavily concentrated on the downstream activities of firms (e.g., Sales) and researchers have long overlooked regionalization with respect to their upstream activities (e.g., R&D). This paper attempts to address the gap in our understanding of the relationship between the two sub-streams of International Business (IB) literature, namely regionalization and internationalization of the R&D of firms. By using cross-border R&D personnel as a proxy to measure the international R&D of firms, we investigate its effect on performance as moderated by the number of regions in which these firms have R&D centers. After using the 2021 EU R&D investment scoreboard to identify the companies committed to bettering their R&D capabilities, data on 675 firms - with international R&D centers - from 2011 to 2021 was imported from the Orbis Cross-border Investment (OCI) database. The panel regression using random-effects yielded results that supported our hypotheses that (1) cross-border R&D activities of firms positively enhance their performance and (2) although the number of regions positively moderates the effect of cross-border R&D at lower levels, the moderation effect becomes negative with a gradual increase in the number of regions. In addition to contributing a proxy with good potential to represent the resources committed to the international R&D activities of firms, this paper sheds a light into the current geographical dispersion of international R&D centers and enriches our understanding of how regionalization influences the effect of cross-border R&D on firm performance.
