Abstract
This study investigated the effects of inhalation of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) essential oil and its main ingredient anethole on mean arterial pressure, pulse rate, low back pain and discomfort in patients underwent coronary angiography using the femoral approach. Sixty-one patients who underwent coronary angiography via the femoral approach were randomly extracted. The experimental groups inhaled 1% fennel essential oil or 1% anethole for 20 min, respectively, while the control group inhaled almond oil. Visual analog scale for low back pain and discomfort, mean arterial pressure and pulse rate were measured before and after treatment. There were no significant differences in mean arterial pressure and discomfort among the three groups. Pulse rate after inhalation of fennel essential oil decreased significantly compared with the control group (p = .044), but it was within a normal range. Although there was no significant difference, low back pain was tended to decrease in the fennel group compared with the control group. These findings indicate that inhalation of fennel essential oil may be useful in reducing low back pain in patients underwent coronary angiography using the femoral approach maintaining mean arterial pressure and pulse rate within a normal range.
