바츨라프 스밀(지은이)
에너지, 환경, 식량, 인구, 경제, 역사, 공공 정책까지 학문의 경계를 넘나들며 50여 년간 광범위한 분야의 연구를 선도해온 환경과학자이자 경제사학자. 세계 발달사를 꿰뚫는 통계분석의 대가로 손꼽히며, 빌 게이츠가 가장 신뢰하는 사상가로 주목받았다. 캐나다 매니토바대학교 환경지리학과 명예교수이며, 캐나다 왕립과학아카데미 회원이다. 체코에서 태어나 프라하 카를로바대학교를 졸업하고 미국 펜실베이니아주립대학교에서 박사학위를 받았다. 유럽연합을 비롯해 미국과 유럽의 다양한 국제기구에서 정책자문을 했다. 세계의 에너지와 환경 정책에 기여한 공로를 인정받아 비미국인으로서는 최초로 미국과학진흥회(AAAS)의 ‘과학기술의 대중이해상’을 받았다. 2010년 미국 외교전문지 〈포린폴리시〉가 발표한 ‘세계적 사상가 100인’에 선정되었고, 2013년 캐나다에서 민간인이 받을 수 있는 최고 훈장인 캐나다훈장을 받았으며, 2015년 OPEC 연구상(OPEC Award for Research)을 수상했다. 사실 기반의 명확한 데이터를 통해 에너지 기술 혁신이 인류 문명과 생태계에 미치는 영향 등 에너지와 환경에 관한 통합적 관점의 책을 집필해왔다. 저서로 《숫자는 어떻게 진실을 말하는가》 《대전환》 《에너지란 무엇인가》 등 40여 권이 있다.
