현시대에 가장 영향력 있는 경제·사회사상가이자 미래학자. 과학과 기술의 발전이 경제, 사회, 환경에 미치는 영향에 대해 광범위한 연구를 진행하며 미래 사회의 새로운 패러다임을 제시해 왔다. 기후변화 문제를 해결하기 위해 3차 산업혁명으로의 전환에 나선 유럽연합과 중국이 경제 계획을 수립하는 데 주요한 설계자로 기여했으며, 미국의 인프라 구축 및 개선 계획과 관련해 미 상원 다수당의 리더인 찰스 슈머의 고문으로도 활동했다. 와튼스쿨 최고경영자 과정 교수(1995-2010)를 지냈으며 “세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 목소리”라는 주제로 《허프포스트》가 수행한 글로벌 설문 조사에서 가장 영향력 있는 경제 사상가 10인에 선정되기도 했다. 『글로벌 그린 뉴딜』, 『한계비용 제로 사회』, 『3차 산업혁명』, 『공감의 시대』, 『소유의 종말』, 『수소 혁명』, 『유러피언 드림』, 『노동의 종말』 등을 포함해 21권에 이르는 그의 저서는 전 세계 35개 이상의 언어로 번역되었다.
