This paper investigates the effect of the policy that improves the approval process of occupational disease on the insurance benefit and household debt in Korea. From 2013 to 2017, the government implemented several policies that advanced the approval process of occupational disease by extending the coverage of illnesses, shortening the process for efficiency. Utilizing the Panel Study of Workers' Compensation Insurance (PSWCI), the difference-in-differences estimates revealed that the policy implementation was effective in increasing the benefits for the treatment group and reducing the chance of household debt rising one year after being discharged from the hospital. Based on these results, this paper suggests that the policy is an effective way of addressing injured workers' financial burden. As such, the welfare policy and household debt work as a substitute for each other.
