마크 베코프(지은이)
콜로라도대학교 명예교수로 30년 넘게 동물행동학을 공부하고 가르쳐왔다. 남극의 아델리 펭귄부터 미국 그랜드티턴 국립공원의 야생 코요테와 늑대, 스텔라 까마귀를 비롯한 고원지대에 사는 새, 콜로라도 개 산책 공원의 개들까지 다양한 동물들의 행동과 마음을 연구한다. 침팬지 연구로 유명한 세계적인 영장류학자 제인 구달과 함께 동물의 ‘윤리적 동물 관리를 위한 동물행동학자들’을 공동 설립했다. 2000년 동물행동 연구 분야에 대한 장기간의 공로를 인정받아 동물행동학회로부터 공로상을 받았다. 범세계적인 환경운동인 ‘뿌리와 새싹(Roots and Shoots)’ 프로그램의 대사직도 맡고 있다. 동물의 행동과 마음에 관한 칼럼을 1000편 이상 기고했고, 200편이 넘는 논문을 발표했다. 《동물에게 귀 기울이기》, 《동물 권리 선언》, 《동물의 감정》 등 30권 이상 책을 지었고, 제인 구달과 함께 《제인 구달의 생명 사랑 십계명》을 썼다.
