책소개
A celebration was in order - our high school classmates were about to turn 77 years young - and we thought we had a plan to convene us all together. But what they say about best-laid plans turned out to be true. Amid a global pandemic and confined to our homes, we went digital.
More than 220 classmates from all around the world joined the Internet messaging system as soon as it was set up. We even ventured into video conferencing, which many of us had thought was just for special professional groups.
It just so happened that it was also the time to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Korean War, 6.25, which broke out on 25th of June, 1950.
One of us shared her 6.25 memory, triggering a flood of similar stories. Some fragmentary episodes were vaguely remembered, some vividly, but each memory carried with it a personal truth, a piece of life. To preserve these memories, we agreed to capture them in writing.
Furthermore, we realized the extent to which our childhood memories shaped our lives. So, we also wrote our life stories of the past 70 years since the war. What happened to the child who once lived in a refugee tent? What happened to the scared little girl who once clung onto the roof of a refugee train?
And thus, this book came to be. Sixty five essays were collected in a short period of time, beginning with childhood memories of the war, continuing with stories of our youth and adulthood, and spanning across the world as we carried our stories, our roots, with us to the various places where we made our homes.
We hope that in these stories, readers may recognize the uniqueness of those times that our generation lived through, and through this tapestry of memories, we hope, in some small way, to bring history further to life.
