샹탈 무페(엮은이)
1943년 6월 17일 벨기에의 샤를루아에서 태어났다. 루뱅가톨릭대학교(벨기에)와 소르본대학교(프랑스)에서 정치철학을 공부한 뒤, 에섹스대학교(영국)에서 만난 에르네스토 라클라우와 함께 『헤게모니와 사회주의 전략』(1985)을 출간하면서 주목받았다. 기존 맑스주의의 경제결정론과 계급정치학을 비판해 포스트맑스주의 논쟁의 중심에 서게 된 무페는 점차 연구 범위를 확장해 이성과 보편성 중심의 서구 근대 정치철학을 급진적으로 비판하면서 자신만의 경합적 접근법(경합적 다원주의)에 의거해 자유주의와 민주주의 이념을 재구성하는 작업에 몰두하고 있다. 현재 영국 웨스트민스터대학교 민주주의연구소와 근현대문화연구소의 교수로 재직 중이다. 주요 저서로 『좌파 포퓰리즘을 위하여』(2018), 『포데모스: 인민의 이름으로』(2016), 『정치적인 것에 대하여』(2005), 『민주주의의 역설』(2000), 『정치적인 것의 귀환』(1993) 등이 있다.
