Abstract

In this thesis, we present bandpass filters (BPFs) using dual-mode vertical split ring resonators (DVSRR). The DVSRR has the advantage of a 3D shape, which allows more RF circuits to be integrated. The proposed DVSRR have two resonant modes, even and odd modes, which can be controlled independently. We apply the DVSRR in a single band BPF, where the resonant frequency and bandwidth are easily determined by adjusting the even and odd modes of the DVSRR. This BPF has separate electric and magnetic coupling (SEMC) structures, resulting in transmission zeroes (TZs) before and after the passband. Electromagnetic (EM) simulations are used to adjust the various design parameters, to in turn alter the characteristics of this BPF. In summary, we designed a dual--band BPF by adding a small DVSRR and experimentally confirmed the results of the EM simulations.
