This thesis is a study of how to nurture students as creative, fusion human resources through the experience of various adjacent fields and to help students develop their interest, attention and success experiences. I developed mathematical teaching and learning materials using middle school masterpieces and applied them and studied how they affect mathematical attitudes. Two research questions have been set up for this purpose.
Research question 1) Develop mathematics teaching and learning materials using masterpieces that use mathematical ideas that can affect the mathematical attitudes of the first grade of middle school gifted class.
Research question 2) Analyze the effect of mathematics teaching and learning materials using masterpieces on the mathematical attitudes of first grade gifted students.
In order to solve the research problems, I developed mathematical teaching and learning materials that utilized the art of eight lessons for nine months, applied it to 20 students of mathematics gifted and talented class in middle school. Mathematical attitudes analyzed the changes based on the questionnaires, interviews, checklists, task notes, and observations.
In order to develop mathematical teaching and learning materials using masterpiece, I first investigated the effects if these studies on mathematical attitudes by conducting literature research focusing on the relationship between mathematics and art. Through the process of admiring, observing, and analyzing masterpieces, I applied the mathematical concepts and planned the teaching and learning materials so that the problems could be solved. The changes in mathematical attitudes were observed synthetically using mathematical attitudes test, interview, checklist, task note and observation. The analysis showed that there was the biggest change in ‘purpose consciousness’ which is a sub-area of attitude to mathematics subject. There was a change in ‘order of attention’, which is a sub-area of learning habits for mathematics subject. There was change in ‘level of interest’, which is a sub-area of attitude to mathematics subject. Mathematical attitudes in interviews and checklists, mathematical learning activities that used masterpieces were encouraged to participate actively and were able to learn self-directedly.
Through mathematical learning activities using masterpieces, I could think about the value of necessity of mathematics in relation to mathematics and other disciplines. By learning the mathematical background of the era in which the painter lived and the mathematical beliefs of the time, we learned that it was efficient learning to learn all three things : history, art, and mathematics.
The following conclusions were obtained through this study.
First, it is a field-oriented mathematics education program for fostering a talented person with creative ability. This program was conducted as a research project for students. In order to develop materials suitable for the level of students the scope of mathematical contents and elements related to mastering was set up by making use of student’s task notes. It would be good if the mathematics teaching and learning materials using the developed masterpieces were reworking according to the purpose of the class. I think that the mathematics teaching and learning materials that used masterpieces could lead to the recognition of the value and usefulness of mathematics in the use of mathematics in other fields. Students can choose to participate in mathematics programs using masterpieces. It can be used as a mathematical program in various ways such as subject, content, level, etc.
Second, I looked at the changes in mathematical attitudes of students using teaching and learning materials using masterpieces. Mathematical attitudes had a significant effect on the analysis of the mathematical attitude test. Mathematical attitudes among the 40 items on the test questionnaires, the following items were the most positive; I would like to learn more about mathematics, I think that mathematics is a necessary course for future study, I want to study mathematics a lot, I want to study mathematics more than now. And the post-prognosis mean score change was the largest. Mathematical attitudes in interviews and checklists, mathematical learning activities that used masterpieces made it possible to feel the usefulness and necessity of mathematics in relation to other disciplines such as art and history as well as mathematics. And it could bring about a change in the idea that mathematics is not a difficult academic discipline. It was confirmed that mathematics teaching and learning using masterpiece had a positive effect on mathematical attitudes.
