롤랑 바르트(지은이)
프랑스의 기호학자, 문학이론가, 문학평론가, 작가. 프랑스 노르망디 셰르부르에서 태어났으며, 1935~1939년까지 소르본 대학에서 고전문학을 전공했다. 1952년 파리 국립과학연구센터CNRS의 연구원이 되었고, 1953년 언어 구조의 자의성을 고찰한 『글쓰기의 영도Le Degrezero de l’criture』를 출간했다. 1957년에는 부르주아 문화의 상징을 고찰한 『신화론Mythologies』을 출간했으며, 1962년에는 프랑스 고등연구원Ecole pratique des hautes etudes의 연구 책임자가 되었다. 1960년대 『기호학 요강Elements de semiologie』(1965), 『유행의 체계Systeme de la mode』(1967) 등을 출간하며 기호학과 구조주의에 전념했다. 그러나 그는 곧 『S/Z』(1970), 『기호의 제국L’mpire des signes』(1970), 『텍스트의 즐거움Le Plaisir du texte』(1973) 등을 출간하며 구조주의를 폐기했다. 1976년에는 콜레주 드 프랑스College de France의 문학기호학 교수로 초빙되었다. 그의 글은 종종 문체가 까다롭기도 하지만 자극적이고 도발적인 것으로 유명하다. 가장 많이 알려진 저서로는 『기호학 요강』, 『S/Z』를 비롯하여 『라신에 관하여Sur Racine』(1963)를 꼽지만, 이 책들이 대중적으로 크게 성공을 거둔 것은 그의 반자서전적 작품 『롤랑 바르트가 쓴 롤랑 바르트Roland Barthes par Roland Barthes』(1975)와 『사랑의 단상Fragments d’n discours amoureux』(1977)이 출간된 후였다. 1980년 교통사고로 사망했으며, 사후 출간된 『작은 사건들Incidents』(1987)에서 동성애에 대한 고백을 발견할 수 있다.
