‘모든 곳의 모든 이들을 위한 세계적 수준의 무상교육’을 통해 더 많은 사람들이 자신의 호기심과 배움을 제한 없이 자연스럽게 사랑할 수 있는 환경을 만들고자 하는 비영리 교육재단 ‘칸 아카데미’의 창립자. 그는 1976년 인도와 방글라데시 출신의 미국 이민자 집안에서 태어났다. MIT에서 수학·전기공학·컴퓨터과학 전공으로 세 개 학위를 받고 하버드경영대학원에서 MBA를 취득한 후 실리콘밸리에서 엔지니어로, 보스턴에서 헤지펀드 분석가로 일했다. 수학 공부에 좌절한 열두 살 사촌동생을 직접 가르친 수업 동영상이 유튜브에서 폭발적 인기를 끌면서 ‘교육계의 록스타’, ‘최고의 수학교사’라는 별명으로 각광받았다. 이를 계기로 누구나 무료로 배울 수 있는 수업 동영상을 제작해 서비스하기 시작했고, ‘교육으로 세상에 변화를 일으키겠다’는 포부로 2008년 ‘칸 아카데미’를 창립한 뒤 유명 벤처투자자 앤 도어를 비롯해 구글, 빌&멜린다 게이츠 재단으로부터 속속 거액의 후원을 받으며 명실공히 비영리 교육재단으로 일구었다. 현재 인종, 출신 배경, 세대가 제각각인 전 세계인들이 거의 모든 주제를 다루는 ‘평생교육의 장’ 칸 아카데미로 모여들고 있다. 이곳의 교육 콘텐츠들은 온라인을 넘어 15개의 공립학교, 차터 스쿨, 독립적 교육기관의 정규수업 과정에서 활발히 이용되고 있다.
