보스턴대학교 사회학과 교수. 미국을 대표하는 진보 지성으로 손꼽히며, 대중 운동 단체들과의 연대 활동을 활발하게 전개하고 있다. 자본주의의 폐해와 민주주의의 파괴에 주목하며, 오늘날의 세계를 ‘기업 지배 사회’로 정의, ‘코포크라시corpocracy’란 개념을 제창한 것으로도 유명하다. 내셔널 퍼블릭 라디오를 비롯한 여러 방송 프로그램에 출연한 바 있으며, <보스턴 글로브>, <뉴스위크>, <비즈니스위크>, <타임> 등 여러 매체에 글을 기고하고 있다. 사회.정치 체제 변혁 등이 주요 관심사이다.
