폴 벤느(지은이)
1975년부터 1998년까지 프랑스 학계의 최고 영예로 꼽히는 콜레주 드 프랑스의 로마사 담당교수를 지냈으며, 지금은 명예교수로 있는 고대사 분야의 세계적인 거장이다. 박학다식과 반골기질, 그리고 거침없는 글쓰기로 무장한 벤느의 저서들은 독창적인 역사 해석과 논쟁적인 주장으로 유명하다. 『역사를 어떻게 쓰는가』(1971) 『빵과 원형경기장』(1976) 『그리스인들은 신화를 믿었는가?』(1983) 『사생활의 역사 1권』(1987) 『고대 로마 사회』(1991) 등이 대표적 저작이다. 1930년생인 그는 은퇴 이후에도 활발한 저작 활동을 벌이고 있다. 880쪽에 달하는 연구서 『그리스 로마 제국』(2005)이라든지, 인터뷰 형식의 대중 역사서 『고대 로마의 성과 권력』(2005), 출간 즉시 베스트셀러 목록에 이름을 올리고 각종 학술상을 수상한 역사 에세이 『우리 세계가 기독교화 되었을 때: 312-394』(2007) 등이 그 증거다.
