▼a "Prospero, once the Duke of Milan, now reigns over a faraway island, living there with his only daughter, Miranda. Twelve years earlier Prospero's brother, in league with the King of Naples, had exiled Prospero and his daughter from their home. One evening, Prospero imagines creating a storm powerful enough to bring his old enemies to his island. He begins to write a play about this tempest, speaking aloud the lines of each of his characters. It is the story of Prospero's past, and his revenge." - title screens. As adapted by Peter Greenaway, the film envisions a magical realm of exquisite beauty, where the innocence of love and dreams of revenge collide to create a tempest. Greenaway structures the film around the 24 books Prospero took into exile, and while remaining faithful to the text, the treatment and delivery of that text could hardly be more different.
