퀸 메리 런던 대학의 역사학 부교수. 국제과학종교학회 회원이며 현대지성사 전문가다. 〈타임스 문예부록Times Literary Supplement〉에 글을 썼고, 심리학의 역사와 빅토리아 시대의 도덕철학에 관한 책을 펴냈다. 2009년에 본서로 영국 과학사학회 딩글상(Dingle Prize)을 수상한 바 있다.
