Music(음악)과 Philia(사랑)의 합성어.
올리버 색스는 인간 본성 속에 깊숙이 자리 잡고 있는 음악적 성향을 선천적인 것으로 여겼다. E.O.윌슨이 살아 있는 것들에 대한 우리의 감정인 ‘생명사랑biophilia’을 선천적인 것으로 간주했듯이, 음악도 거의 생명체처럼 느껴지므로 인간의 ‘음악사랑’ 또한 ‘생명사랑’의 한 형태로 보는 것이다.
《뮤지코필리아》는 올리버 색스 박사가 병원에서 근무하며 직접 만나고 관찰한 환자들의 사례와 “디어 애비Dear Abby” 코너에 칼럼을 쓴 뒤로 받은 편지 사연을 바탕으로 해서 씌어졌다. 그리고 아직은 밝혀야 할 것들이 많이 남아 있는 분야이긴 하지만 뇌와 음악의 상관관계를 연구한 다양하고 선구적인 자료들이 많이 소개되어 있다. 물론 뇌, 신경 기제, 신경 과학, 생리학 등의 딱딱한 이야기를 대중의 눈높이에 맞춰 이해하기 쉽고 흥미롭게 풀어내주는 색스 박사의 글 솜씨는 이 책에서도 변함없이 발휘된다.
그는 예전부터 음악과 뇌의 관계를 밝히고 싶었지만 이와 관련된 연구를 하기도 쉽지 않았고 관련 서적을 구하기도 어려웠다고 한다. 그 이유는 의사들 자체가 환자들의 음악 인식에 대해 관심이 없었다는 것과 또 하나는 추정으로만 존재하는 메커니즘을 밝힐 도구가 발달하지 않았다는 것이다. 하지만 지난 20년 동안 새로운 과학 기술의 발달(MRI, 기능성 MRI 등)로 우리가 음악을 듣고 상상할 때는 물론 심지어 작곡을 할 때 뇌가 어떻게 반응하는지를 실제로 볼 수 있게 되면서 모든 것이 바뀌었다. 음악적 인식이나 상상과 관련해서 자주 발생하는 복잡하고 기괴한 장애들에 관해 엄청난 연구 결과와 관련 서적들이 나오고 있다. 하지만 색스 박사는 과학적인 방법에만 경도되어 환자를 단지 임상실험의 도구로만 전락시키는 위험에 대해 경고한다. 그는 두 가지 접근 방법 즉 최신 기술을 이용한 접근법과 개개인의 환자가 가진 사례의 풍요로움, 그들의 사연과 경험에 귀를 기울이고 상상하면서 그 속으로 함께 들어가는 방법을 접목하는 길을 택했다. 올리버 색스는 이것이《뮤지코필리아》의 핵심을 이루고 있다고 밝힌다.

올리버 색스(지은이)
1933년 영국 런던에서 태어났다. 옥스퍼드 대학교 퀸스칼리지에서 의학 학위를 받았고, 미국으로 건너가 샌프란시스코와 UCLA에서 레지던트 생활을 했다. 1965년 뉴욕으로 옮겨 가 이듬해부터 베스에이브러햄 병원에서 신경과 전문의로 일하기 시작했다. 그 후 알베르트 아인슈타인 의과대학과 뉴욕 대학교를 거쳐 2007년부터 2012년까지 컬럼비아 대학교에서 신경정신과 임상 교수로 일했다. 2012년 록펠러 대학교가 탁월한 과학 저술가에게 수여하는 ‘루이스 토머스상’을 수상했고, 옥스퍼드 대학교를 비롯한 여러 대학에서 명예박사 학위를 받았다. 2015년 안암이 간으로 전이되면서 향년 82세로 타계했다. 올리버 색스는 신경과 전문의로 활동하면서 여러 환자들의 사연을 책으로 펴냈다. 인간의 뇌와 정신 활동에 대한 흥미로운 이야기들을 쉽고 재미있게 그리고 감동적으로 들려주어 수많은 독자들에게 큰 사랑을 받았다. 〈뉴욕타임스〉는 문학적인 글쓰기로 대중과 소통하는 올리버 색스를 ‘의학계의 계관시인’이라고 불렀다. 지은 책으로 베스트셀러 《아내를 모자로 착각한 남자》를 비롯해 《색맹의 섬》 《뮤지코필리아》 《환각》 《마음의 눈》 《목소리를 보았네》 《나는 침대에서 내 다리를 주웠다》 《깨어남》 《편두통》 등 10여 권이 있다. 생을 마감하기 전에 자신의 삶과 연구, 저술 등을 감동적으로 서술한 자서전 《온 더 무브》와 삶과 죽음을 담담한 어조로 통찰한 칼럼집 《고맙습니다》, 인간과 과학에 대한 무한한 애정이 담긴 과학에세이 《의식의 강》, 자신이 평생 사랑하고 추구했던 것들에 관한 우아하면서도 사려 깊은 에세이집 《모든 것은 그 자리에》를 남겨 잔잔한 감동을 불러일으켰다. 홈페이지 www.oliversacks.com
