데이비드 비담(지은이)
사회이론가로 사회권과 경제권의 역할에 대한 연구를 포함해 민주주의와 인권 분야에 크게 공헌했다. 1980년 리즈 대학에서 랄프 밀리반드에 이어 정치학 교수직을 역임했다. 막스 베버에 대한 권위자이자 미헬스의 저작들에 초점을 맞춘 엘리트 이론에 대한 연구로 국제적 명성을 획득했다. 이후 마르크스주의 이론과 파시즘 분석에도 크게 공헌했다. ‘민주적 감사’(Democratic Audit)라는 시민단체의 창시자로서 정치적으로도 왕성한 활동을 펼쳤으며, 민주주의와 인권에 관한 전문 컨설턴트로서 유럽 의회, 유네스코 등 여러 국제기구 및 개발 기관에 자문을 제공해 왔다.
