수잔 와이즈 바우어(지은이)
1968년 버지니아에서 태어나 초·중·고 과정을 홈스쿨링으로 마친 후 17세에 문학과 언어 부문에서 미국 최고의 대학인 윌리엄앤드메리 대학에 대통령 전액 장학생으로 입학했다. 옥스퍼드대 교환 학생으로 신학을 공부하고, 미국으로 돌아와 영문학과 미국 종교사로 석사, 미국학으로 박사 학위를 받았다. 1994년부터 동 대학에서 영문학 교수로 재직 중이다. 라틴어, 히브리어, 그리스어, 아랍어, 프랑스어를 구사하며, 교장 출신 어머니 제시 와이즈와 가정 중심 교육의 경험을 살려 공동 집필한 《The Well-Trained Mind》는 홈스쿨링의 정본이 되었다. 다방면의 장서를 넓고 깊게 읽는 다독가이자 자신의 지식을 쉽고 직설적인 문체로 풀어쓰는 저술가로, 《교양 있는 우리 아이를 위한 세계역사 이야기》 《독서의 즐거움》 《문제적 과학책》 등 다수의 베스트셀러를 출간했으며 균형감 있는 역사 저술로 높이 평가받고 있다.
