유니버시티 칼리지 런던(UCL)의 음성 언어학과 교수이다. 캘리포니아 어바인 주립대학의 언어학 교수를 역임하였다. 1991년 출판된 The Tonal Phonology of Chinese의 저자이고 성조 관련 연구서를 많이 발표하고 있다.
