피터 키비(지은이)
우리시대 음악 미학의 선도적 사상가. 미국 미학회 회장을 지낸 그는 럿거스 대학 철학과 교수로 재직 중이다. 《Introduction to a Philosophy of Music》(2002), 《The Performance of Reading: An Essay in the Philosophy of Literature》(2003) 등 여러 권의 책을 펴냈으며, 국내 출간 도서로는 《순수음악의 미학Music Alone: Philosophical Reflections on the Purely Musical Experience》(2000)이 있다. 그는 이 책에서 철학과 역사, 음악과 미학에 대한 폭넓은 지식을 바탕으로 고대부터 만들어진 천재의 두 개념, ‘사로잡힌 자’와 ‘사로잡은 자’에 대해 서술하고 있다. 18세기 이래, 서구에서 천재에 대한 두 개념은 마치 진자가 운동하는 것처럼 번갈아가며 부각되고 있다. 그는 이러한 진자의 운동이 천재의 개념에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 분석하며, 천재가 우리에게 어떤 의미를 지니는지 논한다.
