루이 암스트롱 (Louis Armstrong)(아티스트)
재즈의 본고장 미국 뉴올리언스에서 1900년도에 태어났다. 재즈초기의 뉴올리언스 스타일을 오늘날까지 전한 재즈의 선구자이다. 가난한 흑인의 아들로 태어나 소년시절 소년원에서 코넷을 배우고 1922년 시카고에서 킹 올리버악단에 들어가 주목을 끌었다. 그후 악기를 트럼펫으로 바꾸어 점차 인기가 높아졌으며, 1925∼1928년 자신의 악단인 '핫 파이브(Hot Five)' 및 '핫 세븐(Hot Seven)'의 이름으로 취입한 그의 레코드들은 재즈 역사상 불후의 명연주로 꼽히고 있다. 1931년에는 대악단을 조직, 이듬해부터 여러 차례 유럽여행을 하여 큰 성공을 거두고 1947년에는 악단 '올스타즈'를 결성하여 죽기 전까지 활약하였다. 전성기의 그는 음색, 기교, 감정 등 모든 점에서 가장 뛰어났고, 재즈의 여러 면에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 특히 그가 재즈 연주에 있어 독주의 중요성을 확립한 것과, 또 가수로서 스캣창법을 처음으로 사용한 점 등은 간과할 수 없는 일들이다. 1971년 7월 6일 타계했다.
