브루스 커밍스(지은이)

현재 시카고대학 석좌교수이며, 한국 근현대사와 동아시아 국제관계를 연구해 왔다. 1960년대 후반 ‘평화봉사단’의 일원으로 한국에 온 뒤 한국 현대사 연구에 몰두해 왔으며, 1981년 북한을 방문하기도 했다. 특히 『한국전쟁의 기원』은 국제정치학·사회학·역사학을 아우르는 학제적 접근을 통해, 전쟁의 발발과 전개에 대한 천착을 넘어 한국전쟁의 역사적·사회적 기원을 파고든 역작으로서 국내외 한국전쟁 연구에 큰 파문을 일으켰다. 『한국전쟁의 기원』 1권으로 미국역사학회의 존 K. 페어뱅크 상을, 『한국전쟁의 기원』 2권으로 국제연구학회의 퀸시 라이트 도서상을 수상했으며, 2007년 제1회 후광 김대중 학술상과 2017년 제2회 제주4.3평화상을 수상했다. 국내에 번역된 주요 저서로는 『한국전쟁의 기원』 『브루스 커밍스의 한국현대사』 『미국 패권의 역사』 『김정일 코드』 등이 있다.
