지그문트 바우만(지은이)
1925년 폴란드 유대계 가정에서 태어났다. 2차 세계대전 당시 나치를 피해 소련으로 도피했다가 소련군이 지휘하는 폴란드 의용군에 가담해 바르샤바로 귀환했다. 폴란드사회과학원에서 사회학을 공부했고, 후에 바르샤바대학교에 진학해 철학을 공부했다. 1954년에 바르샤바대학교의 교수가 되었고 마르크스주의 이론가로 활동했다. 1968년 공산당이 주도한 반유대 캠페인의 절정기에 교수직을 잃고 국적을 박탈당한 채 조국을 떠나, 이스라엘 텔아비브대학교에서 잠시 가르치다 1971년 리즈대학교 사회학과 교수로 부임하며 영국에 정착했다. 1990년 정년퇴직 후 리즈대학교와 바르샤바대학교 명예교수로 있으면서 활발한 학문 활동을 했으며, 2017년 1월 9일 91세 일기로 별세했다. 1989년에 발표한 《현대성과 홀로코스트 MODERNITY AND THE HOLOCAUST》를 펴낸 뒤 세계적인 명성을 얻었다. 1990년대 탈근대 문제를 본격적으로 다루며 명성을 쌓았고, 2000년대 현대사회의 유동성과 인간의 조건을 분석하는 ‘유동하는 현대LIQUID MODERNITY’ 시리즈로 대중적 인지도를 높였다. 1992년에 사회학 및 사회과학 부문 유럽 아말피 상을, 1998년 아도르노 상을 수상했다. 2010년에는 “지금 유럽의 사상을 대표하는 최고봉”이라는 찬사를 받으며 아스투리아스 상을 수상했다. 《레트로토피아》, 《왜 우리는 불평등을 감수하는가?》, 《왜 우리는 계속 가난한가? 》, 《유동하는 공포》,《쓰레기가 되는 삶들》 등 다수의 저작이 있다.
