앤서니 기든스(지은이)
현대 사회학계의 세계적인 석학인 그는 사회 이론과 계층론 분야에서 널리 알려져 있는 영국의 대표적인 사회학자다. 독일의 위르겐 하버마스와 함께 유럽 지성의 쌍벽을 이루며 ‘영국의 자존심’으로 불릴 만큼 대중적 지지와 학문적 권위를 인정받는 거장이다. 특히 사회 이론 분야에서 유럽의 지적 전통과 현대적 흐름을 반영한 ‘사회 구조화 이론’으로 독자적인 이론 체계를 구축하였으며, 사회주의의 경직성과 자본주의의 불평등을 극복하는 ‘제3의 길’이라는 새로운 사회 발전 모델을 주창하였다. 이 ‘제3의 길’은 토니 블레어 전 영국 총리와 게르하르트 슈뢰더 전 독일 총리 등 유럽을 이끄는 중도좌파 정치가들의 이론적 바탕이 되었다. 기든스는 고전 사회학자들의 이론을 검토하는 작업부터 현대성에 관한 논의에 이르기까지 사회 이론가로서 세계에 널리 알려져 있다. 세계적인 사회학자가 사회학 입문서를 쓴다는 것 자체가 쉽지 않은 일이었지만, 기든스는 혼신의 힘을 다하여 이 책을 계속 보완하며 제8판에 이르렀다. 그의 저작은 전 세계 29개 국어로 번역되어 널리 읽히고 있는데, 기든스 자신이 폴리티(Polity)라는 학술 전문 출판사를 공동 설립해서 매년 80여 권의 학술 서적을 간행하는 출판인이기도 하다. 영국 헐대학교 사회학과를 졸업했으며(1959), 런던정치경제대학교(LSE)에서 사회학 석사 학위를, 케임브리지대학교에서 사회학 박사 학위를 받았다(1976). 영국 레스터대학교 사회학 강사(1961~1970), 케임브리지대학교 강사와 교수(1970~1997)를 거쳐 런던정치경제 대학교 학장(1997~2003)을 역임했다. 현재 런던정치경제대학교 사회학과 명예교수로 있다. 주요 저서로 『자본주의와 현대 사회 이론』(1971), 『선진 사회의 계급 구조』(1973), 『사회학 방법의 새로운 규칙』(1976), 『사적 유물론 비판』(1981), 『민족 국가와 폭력』(1985), 『근대성의 결과』(1990), 『근대성과 자아 정체성』(1991), 『친밀성의 변동: 현대 사회의 성, 사 랑, 에로티시즘』(1992), 『좌파와 우파를 넘어서』(1994), 『사회학의 변론』(1996), 『제3의 길: 사회 민주주의 쇄신』(1998), 『노동의 미래』(2002)가 있다.
