Author Introduction
존 던(지은이)
현대 지성계를 이끌고 있는 대표적인 영국 학자들 중 한 사람으로, 잉글랜드에서 태어나 케임브리지대학의 킹스칼리지에서 학위를 받았으며, 하버드대학 대학원에서 석사 과정을 마쳤다. 대학원을 졸업한 후에는 주로 역사학부에서 활동했으나 1972년부터는 정치학부 위주로 활동하며 현재 케임브리지대학 킹스칼리지 정치학과의 명예교수를 지내고 있다. 존 포칵, 퀜틴 스키너와 함께 정치 사상계의 ‘케임브리지학파’를 설립한 3대 학자로 꼽히는 존 던은 미국, 아프리카, 인도, 중국을 거쳐 전 세계 민주주의의 긍정적인 면에 대해 40년이 넘는 긴 시간 동안 연구해왔다. 2005년 한국학중앙연구원에서 주최하고, KBS에서 방영한 포럼 <세계 지성과의 대담>에 출연하여 ‘한국 민주주의의 위기’에 대한 해법을 제시하기도 했다. 저서로는 《Setting the People Free》, 《The Cunning of Unreason》 등이 있다.
